The latest fundraising activity for the St David’s Church Tower Appeal will be a feast for body and soul.
The church is taking linking with this week’s Neath Food Festival (October 4 & 5) with activities ranging from a ‘Human Fruit Machine’ on Saturday to a special Harvest Thanksgiving Tower Service on Sunday (October 6th).
The events are part of ongoing efforts to raise the £500,000 needed for urgent repairs to the iconic tower and roof above the choir stalls.
The Appeal was launched in May at a special fundraising concert given by mezzo-soprano and former St David’s Church chorister Katherine Jenkins.
Since then the appeal has been fortunate to receive the support of a number of individuals, groups and organisations that have held a wide range of concerts and events.
While grant funding has been awarded to the project by the Heritage Lottery Fund, and not-for-profit company WREN which awards grants to community, conservation and heritage projects.
This week’s activities in the church hope to maintain the momentum of support the Appeal has had from the community of Neath.
“St David’s Church is very much part of the community and we are always delighted to get involved in Neath Food Festival, and the church will be open on Saturday (October 5th) when there will be foodie fun with the ‘Human Fruit Machine’, ” said Canon Stephen Ryan, Rector of Neath.
“This year we are also drawing attention to the Tower Appeal and as part of our traditional harvest celebrations we will be holding a special Tower service on Sunday.
“The congregation will be joined by local dignitaries and representatives of organisations in the town to celebrate the beauty of harvest-time and highlight the importance of maintaining St David’s Church Tower as a Neath landmark.”
Added Canon Ryan, “During the service a collection of food items will be made for Neath Food Bank, which performs such a vital service for many people and families in our community.”
